How to Colorize Old Black-and-White Photos with AI

Apr 13, 2026 Homture

Old family photos hold irreplaceable memories, but faded black-and-white images can feel distant and hard to connect with. Homture's Old Photo Alive template uses AI to colorize old photos, repair damage, and add subtle animation — all in a single tap.

This guide explains how to use the Old Photo Alive feature to bring your vintage photos back to life and display them on your Homture digital frame.

What is Old Photo Alive?

Old Photo Alive is a template in Homture's Magic tab, grouped under "Relive old memories." It's a three-in-one AI tool that does the following in one step:

  • HD Repair — Restores clarity, sharpness, and detail to damaged or low-resolution photos
  • Colorize — Adds realistic, AI-generated color to black-and-white or faded images
  • Animate — Applies subtle, lifelike motion to bring the subject to life
Official description: "One tap for HD repair, colorizing, and animated motion." — No manual editing required.

Best Photos for Old Photo Alive

This template works best with:

  • Old family portraits and group photos
  • Black-and-white photos from the mid-20th century or earlier
  • Faded or yellowed vintage prints
  • Scanned film photographs with visible grain or damage
Not ideal for: Modern color photos, heavily damaged photos where faces are unrecognizable, or photos with very small subjects. The AI needs enough detail to work with.

Step-by-Step: Colorize Old Photos with AI

Step 1: Open the Magic Tab

Launch the Homture app and tap Magic at the bottom of the screen.

Step 2: Find Old Photo Alive

Scroll through the templates to find the Old Photo Alive template. It's listed under the "Relive old memories" group. Tap it to open the template.

Step 3: Select Your Photo

Tap the "Select a photo" button (white text on green background) to open your photo library. Choose the old or black-and-white photo you want to restore.

Scanning tip: If your original photo is a physical print, scan it at 600 DPI or higher before uploading. A higher-resolution scan gives the AI more detail to work with, resulting in better colorization and repair.

Step 4: Wait for AI Processing

After selecting your photo, the AI begins its three-stage restoration. The app will notify you when the result is ready. Processing typically takes a few minutes.

Step 5: Review the Result

Preview the restored photo in the app. You'll see the original black-and-white image transformed into a colorized, HD-repaired, and subtly animated version.

Step 6: Send to Your Frame

Tap "Select frames & send" to display the restored photo on your Homture frame. The animated version will play when someone approaches the frame.

Proximity playback: Your Homture frame uses a proximity sensor to detect when someone is within 5–6 feet. The animated AI video plays automatically, creating a moving, living display of your restored memory.

Why Colorize Old Photos with AI?

Manual photo colorization by a professional artist can take hours and cost hundreds of dollars. AI colorization through Homture takes minutes and uses Magic Credits instead.

Beyond convenience, the three-in-one approach means you don't need separate tools for repair, colorization, and animation. One template handles everything, and the result is ready to display on your frame immediately.

Tips for Better Results

  • Use the clearest scan available — More detail means more accurate colorization
  • Faces should be visible — The AI uses facial features to guide realistic skin tone colorization
  • Avoid extreme damage — Torn or heavily scratched areas may not restore perfectly
  • Try multiple photos — Some photos respond better than others; credits are returned if generation fails

Conclusion

Homture's Old Photo Alive template makes it easy to colorize old photos with AI. With one tap, your black-and-white family portraits become colorized, HD-repaired, and animated memories ready to display on your digital frame.

It's one of the most meaningful ways to use your Homture frame — turning faded history into something vivid and alive for everyone in your home to see.
